Wonder Woman – Film Review

Director Patty Jenkins proves that the DC Extended Universe is not completely ridden with bad films, as her latest film in the franchise, Wonder Woman, is a truly exceptional origin story superhero film.

Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is a woman who lives on a island named Themyscira. On that island, Prince often trains and fights to become an amazing warrior one day. Themyscira is an island that has never seen a man walk on it. That changes, however, when a spy named Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes a plane into the oceans of Themyscira which catches the attention of Prince, and she ventures out to rescue him. From that point on, Prince and Trevor embark on a journey to stop an ongoing brutal war.

Gadot is the true standout as the titular character, reprising her role from 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We only got a small taste as to what her character was like in that film, because as the title suggests, it was a film about Batman and Superman. Wonder Woman is a film about Wonder Woman. It is a film that focuses on who she is, and her journey to become a figure of hope. Also, Gadot’s chemistry on screen with Pine is some of the greatest chemistry I have seen between two actors so far this year in cinema.

The story of Wonder Woman was also incredibly gripping. Her character is fleshed out extremely well to the point where you always feel for her character. Throughout the entire running time, you always root for Gadot’s Wonder Woman to achieve whatever it is she wants to achieve. It is also a film that has a surprising amount of humor, but fortunately, it is humor that always works and never once feels stale or repetitive. With last year’s Suicide Squad, there were one too many attempts at comedy with that film, but, unfortunately, the jokes never quite landed, and came across as forced. The reason why Suicide Squad had comedy in the first place, was more than likely due to criticisms of Batman v Superman being too serious, and not being a fun superhero film.

Gal Gadot’s solo outing as Wonder Woman is a breathtaking ride, filled with suspenseful action sequences, great direction from Patty Jenkins, and has a story that was extremely intriguing.
