Son of Batman – Film Review
When Batman (voice of Jason O’Mara) learns he has a son Damian (voice of Stuart Allan) who was raised by the League of Assassins, he tries to connect with him while also battling the villain Deathstroke (voice of Thomas Gibson).
For those that are unaware, this week I am going on a marathon, watching all of the DC Animated Movie Universe films. Previously, I watched and reviewed the exceptional Justice League: War and the rather lackluster Justice League: Dark. But, at my core, I am a big fan of comic book/superhero related movies and so I was excited to see what else this animated film series would have to offer, and so today, I checked out the second installment in the series, Son of Batman.
Instantly, the animation is something that stood out to me. All of it looks truly beautiful like usual. A lot of it has great attention to detail, with one character animation in the beginning standing out immensely. There truly is not a single weak shot in the entire running time.
But every great movie needs two things – a great story and a great script. Gratefully, Son of Batman has exactly that. I was genuinely thrilled throughout the whole picture and was curious as to where certain plot points were heading. While some can be somewhat obvious, it still makes for great entertainment and even has a strong message to take away from it by the end.
Also, all of the voice acting was terrific, mainly by Jason O’Mara and Thomas Gibson. They do a great job at voicing iconic characters such as Batman and Deathstroke respectively.
Similar to Justice League: War, the action sequences here are a total blast to watch. There is really something of excitement happening every single second in this film which was such a delight. There is no down time here. Something interesting is always happening and the plot is always moving along.
When it comes to issues with the movie, I have to be honest, I could not stand the character of Damian Wayne. His entire character trait was just whining throughout the whole film, and it didn’t take long for me to completely dislike his character. He constantly complains about things and will surely get on the nerves of not only Batman fans, but just audiences in general looking to have a fun time. It also has an ending that feels too abrupt and out of left field.
But at the end of the day, this is an extremely entertaining movie that has great animation and a story that was powerful while still extremely familiar. Its action is great, and is a great second entry for the DC Animated Movie Universe.
While its story is familiar, Son of Batman manages to thrill and excite with great action stunning animation.
