Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me – Film Review
Published November 5, 2022
If you’re reading this review, then there’s a good chance you know that my all-time favorite artist in the world is Taylor Swift. She has been there for me through everything and continues to be to this day. But if I were to pick a second favorite female artist, I’d have to go with Selena Gomez. Her music is definitely right up my alley, and every single time she announces a new song, album, or movie/show, I’m excited.
But I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t know a whole lot about her, and that’s one of the many reasons why I was excited to watch Alek Keshishian‘s brand new documentary film Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which primarily chronicles the singer-songwriter’s life throughout the past six years, while also briefly touching upon her life as a youngster, growing up at home, and being involved with Disney.
I’m incredibly glad to report that this is a dazzling, highly intimate, and deeply emotional film that explores all of the most crucial moments in Gomez’s life throughout the past couple of years. For fans of the singer-songwriter/actress, this documentary is a must-watch. And even if you aren’t as well-versed when it comes Gomez, you should still check out this film to see the wild life that she has lived.
Although this film is only about an hour and a half long, it never once shies away from getting deep and personal when it comes to Gomez’s life. We learn all about her life as a young child, growing up and having a normal life before getting thrust right into the crazy world of Disney. What kind of young child could predict just how severely their life would change just by starring in some episodes of Barney?
Here, Gomez opens up about her struggles with fame and the massive toll its all taken on her. She also opens up about the musical side of her career. Millions of people all around the world absolutely adore her music, but if you ask the singer herself, she tends to criticize her own work. There are some truly sad scenes in the first act of the movie where she is simply not satisfied with a performance she just did and it’ll surely crush your heart.
But that’s not to say the entire movie is an emotionally devastating rollercoaster, because there’s plenty of wholesome moments in here as well. One of my favorite scenes in the entire film followed Gomez as she went back to her old neighborhood to revisit her childhood home and enjoy all the positive memories that came with it. She then visits her childhood school where she recounts having crushes on boys and enjoying the life of just being a kid.
There are some moments about Gomez’s life that I wish were included and touched upon in this film that simply didn’t get brought up, and it definitely could have benefited from having a longer running time, but at the end of the day, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is an extremely moving and powerful documentary that will open viewers eyes to the rollercoaster ride of a life that the popular star has lived.
