Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always – Film Review
Published April 26, 2023
Thirty years after the wise and powerful Zordon formed the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the team comes face to face with a familiar threat from the past. In the midst of a global crisis, they are called on once again to be the heroes the world needs.
Even though I usually tended to watch a lot of bizarre shows and movies as a kid, I never really found myself watching anything Power Rangers related. It was only later on in my life – particularly my late teens – when I finally ended up watching some of it and I genuinely enjoyed it.
To this day, my favorite piece of Power Rangers media is without a doubt the 2017 live-action film directed by Dean Israelite – a movie which I really hope gets a sequel. However, I understand that for a lot of fans of the franchise, the original series is their favorite, whether its because of nostalgia or otherwise.
And even though Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is one of the corniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, I have to admit that it is remarkably entertaining and filled to the brim with lots of fun action sequences and genuinely strong emotional beats that fans of the franchise are going to adore.
If you’re not a fan of the series by this point though, you’re probably going to want to steer clear of this film by any means necessary because it certainly won’t convert you into one. As a matter of fact, if you loathe the series, each minute of this film is going to be excruciating for you.
Sadly, even though I enjoyed the film, I must admit that the running time felt painfully short and because of this, a lot of the story points felt outrageously rushed. This film clocks in at a total of just fifty-five minutes – yes, that’s right – not even a full hour. I understand that this was more of a reunion film but even still, it would’ve definitely benefited from a longer running time.
But a lot of what makes this movie so much fun to watch is just how goofy it is, true to the original series. It’s also a blast to watch some of the old cast come back one more time such as the electrifying Walter Emanuel Jones, David Yost, and the wonderful Catherine Sutherland.
It’s certainly not one of the most memorable movies you’ll end up seeing this year (unless you’re a die-hard Power Rangers fan), but this is still a highly enjoyable way to spend fifty-five minutes. If you want to have a campy good time, you might as well throw this on the TV.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always isn’t anything remarkable, but it’s still a highly enjoyable film with lots of amusing action and fun character moments.
