If you have not yet seen Spiral: From the Book of Saw, then you are truly missing out on one of the best movies of the entire year thus far. It excellently injected a new sense of life into a franchise that was seeming to run out of steam and quick. Aside from the wonderful performances from Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Max Minghella amongst other great aspects, one of the most refreshing things to see in Spiral was the editing.

It had a sense of style and flair to it never before seen in the long-running horror franchise, and you can thank Toronto-based editor Dev Singh for that. Today, I sat down with the editor of Spiral to talk about the challenges and rewards that came with editing such a massive movie, as well as what’s in store for fans of Resident Evil in the new reboot movie Welcome to Raccoon City, which is set to be released later this year.

Talking with Dev was an absolute blast and I learned quite a lot about editing and some interesting and funny tidbits about the behind-the-scenes day-to-day production on Spiral, including that the hilarious opening scene with Chris Rock was mostly improvisational.
