Guided by a seductive and mysterious woman, a couple on vacation venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism and untold horror. A tragic accident soon leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.

In the best way possible, watching Brandon Cronenberg‘s Infinity Pool is like embarking on a terrifyingly spooky and frightening nightmare from which you’ll never awaken. You will wonder about life, the cosmos, and what lies in store for us in the future after watching this two-hour deep dive into insanity. There are times when it’s downright terrifying.

Having previously directed the equally frightening Possessor, Cronenberg appears to be one of the genre’s most promising directors. You’ll want to put the pieces of the mind-numbingly perplexing puzzle that is Infinity Pool together more than anything.

I adore that although if all the solutions are there, the viewer will have to work extremely hard to find them. I long for the times when movies genuinely aimed to test and engage their audience. These days, there are so many movies that give us the solutions up front, which can get a little tiresome.

As a director, you should always have faith in your audience’s intelligence to solve the mysteries largely independently and without much assistance.

Thankfully, Cronenberg is a director who doesn’t guide the audience. He will lead you on the adventure, but you, kid, are on your own to figure things out.

I won’t go into more depth about the plot than the summary I provided above, but just know that this film is wildly bizarre in a lovely way. It’s a movie with a lot of crazy things happening. So much so that many people are likely to find it overpowering upon first viewing.

Simply said, it’s a good thing the movie is so fantastic and alluring that you’ll want to see it again to avoid getting too overwhelmed by everything. Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth, two artists who are constantly proving they are the best of the last few years, have shown their incredible versatility in their work, and this is no exception.

As the mysterious and unsettling Gabi Bauer, who appears to be amiable on the outside but is anything but, Goth in particular is an amazing powerhouse. Goth has established herself as a highly gifted actor who can play some of the most intriguing horror characters out there, especially with last year’s Pearl, and Infinity Pool is no exception.

Given how bizarre everything is, it would definitely be best for you to avoid this movie unless you are familiar with Cronenberg’s work or adore unusual horror movies like I do. It’s a lot to process, but enquiring minds will undoubtedly want to return to this alluring pool of mystery.

With two outstanding lead performances from Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth, writer/director Brandon Cronenberg skillfully crafts Infinity Pool into a mind-numbingly insane plunge into destruction.
