Incredibles 2 – Film Review
The long fourteen year wait for the sequel to 2004’s critically acclaimed The Incredibles is finally here, once again written and directed by Brad Bird.
Helen Parr / Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter) wants to prove to the world that supers can be a force of good in the world. In order to prove this, she sets out on a mission to find and defeat the evil Screenslaver (voice of Bill Wise).
Meanwhile, Bob Parr / Mr. Incredible (voice of Craig T. Nelson) has to stay at home and take care of the kids Dash (voice of Huck Milner), Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), and Jack-Jack, who is just starting to develop his first few superpowers.
I was really excited to see Incredibles 2, as I was a big fan of the first film that came out in 2004, just like a plethora of individuals. I do not think 2004’s The Incredibles is one of the greatest superhero films of all time, but it certainly is a cut above a large portion of superhero films that are out there. The same excitement and anticipation for Incredibles 2 is evident for the rest of the world as well, as the line-up to even get inside my local movie theatre was backed up all the way to the street.
The animation on display in Incredibles 2 is truly stellar. Almost every single one of Disney・Pixar films look absolutely amazing, and this film is no exception.
I was careful to not delve too deep into the plot synopsis for Incredibles 2 earlier in this review, and I will continue to do so here, but, this film’s story as it progressed surprised and thrilled me exceptionally. There are plenty of scenes in this film that will make not only kids excited, but adults as well. The same goes for some of the humor, as a large portion of Incredibles 2‘s humor are jokes only adults will get, which is not a first for a Disney・Pixar film.
An element that was a bit disappointing was the way the film handled its marketing. Some of the trailers make it seem like something will be more prevalent in the film than it actually is, and I was quite disappointed when I found out while watching the film, that this element of the film was not going to return. Similarly speaking, quite a few characters do not get as much screen time as I hoped they would have. Some of these characters include fan-favorites from 2004’s The Incredibles such as Edna Mode (voice of Brad Bird) and Lucius Best / Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson). Edna Mode in particular though, as she is really only in one or two scenes in the entire film which clocks in at one-hundred and eighteen minutes.
Some of the editing choices were also a bit jarring. One scene we are witnessing something serious and dramatic, and then it suddenly cuts to a humorous scene, which felt exceptionally odd.
Incredibles 2 is a film that has a gripping story with a nice blend of humor and truly stunning animation. It’s also a film that has exciting action sequences and has fan-favorite characters returning, even if their screen time is limited and some bizarre editing styles are included.
