Grimcutty – Film Review
Published October 18, 2022
A suburban teen girl and her little brother must stop a terrifying internet meme brought to life by the hysteria of their parents.
Ah, yes… the good old fashioned internet meme subgenre of horror. Why is this even still a trend? Creepypastas on the internet as they are are amazing, and somehow, the television show Channel Zero managed to bring them to life hauntingly. So why do so many directors struggle?
Of course, there was the infamous Slender Man which was transformed into an abysmal movie, and now we have a new film that feels like it could be from a creepypasta in the form of Grimcutty. Honestly though, this easily could have been made into a Momo movie instead since it follows the same premise as the real-world challenge that happened many years ago. Whatever happened to that project?
Regardless, Grimcutty is an outstandingly bad movie in nearly every way except for the opening scene which is admittedly quite creepy and unsettling. Everything after that takes itself way too seriously and it oftentimes ends up being unintentionally hilarious in many scenes.
All of the lines in this movie and the delivery in which they were given were both insanely bad. When watching the film, you will constantly find yourself wondering how director/writer John Ross‘s ideas got the okay from studios. Didn’t they take a good long look at the script and find countless problems with it?
This feels like the first draft of a movie. The characters here are ridiculously thin and underdeveloped to the point where it’s nearly impossible to be actually invested in any of them. The teenage characters are the cliché on-their-phones-all-the-time kids and the parents are the cliché phones-and-social-media-are-bad-for-you parents.
Aside from that… the characters have nothing to them. And unfortunately, the performances were mostly quite bad as well. Who knows, though? Perhaps all of these actors involved with this movie are actually quite good at what they do. Sadly, they got saddled with a bad movie.
|It’s also an unbelievably uneventful horror film despite having an admittedly crazy premise. There was so much more that this film could’ve done to stick its hooks into you but it instead tends to be relatively tame and laid back. Most of this film just follows our lead character Asha trying to convince her parents that Grimcutty is real. It’s all exceptionally tedious.
The creature design here, however, is remarkably impressive and it was easily my favorite aspect to this whole thing. The titular entity is genuinely freaky looking and surely would’ve been absolutely terrifying if it was in a different movie. The team that designed this character deserve to work on a better project next time.
Because of its extremely poorly written script, Grimcutty is oftentimes unintentionally hilarious and uneventful, spending too much time with annoying, underdeveloped characters than focusing on thrills.
