Five Nights at Freddy’s – Film Review

I still vividly remember August of 2014. It meant that summer was coming to an end soon. Unfortunately, that meant going back to school. But there was also a little good during that month. It was the month that Scott Cawthon‘s now-globally-popular video game, Five Nights at Freddy’s, was released. Over the following nine years, the franchise has grown to become one of the most significant and cherished in gaming history, inspiring a number of sequels.

As someone who has been a part of the community since the very beginning—back when the original game had only a few thousand installs on a website called IndieDB—I can attest that Emma Tammi‘s film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s is every bit as brilliant as I had imagined. It’s a really wonderful film with a ton of suspense, tension, and mystery, and it’s one of my favorite moviegoing experiences ever. It is a Five Nights at Freddy’s fan’s dream come true. There’s also tons of incredible references and easter eggs that’ll have fans going berserk with excitement.

The terrifying animatronic mascots are brought to life with amazing practical effects. There’s a constant sense of dread in the film due to their menacing yet mechanical presence.

The ensemble gives outstanding performances, with Josh Hutcherson capturing the essence of Mike Schmidt as a sensitive but resolute man. He does a compelling and convincing job of portraying a man who is troubled by his past and is fighting to keep his sister safe. As Abby, Piper Rubio is a revelation, displaying an astonishing range of emotions for a young performer. The character of Vanessa is made more complex by Elizabeth Lail, and Mary Stuart Masterson‘s portrayal of Aunt Jane, who is manipulative, is terrifying. As Steve Raglan/William Afton, Matthew Lillard is excellent and exudes a terrifying presence on screen. One scene with him is utterly bone chilling and is sure to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

Emma Tammi’s direction is excellent; she expertly creates a sense of impending doom and builds tension. The film’s timing is perfect, allowing viewers to lose themselves in the narrative without taking a break. Lyn Moncrief‘s cinematography is incredibly gorgeous, perfectly capturing the eerie atmosphere of the abandoned restaurant and the terrifying animatronics. Tammi’s skill at fusing real-world effects with computer-generated imagery adds to the film’s realism and helps the audience accept that these evil machines exist.

The film explores themes of sacrifice, family, and the paranormal, giving the story more depth. It deftly examines the fallout from previous deeds and the extent people will go to in order to keep those they love safe. The audience is kept guessing by the story’s turns and turns, and it’s satisfying and shocking to learn the animatronics’ origins. By including the dreamscape, the boundaries between nightmare and reality are blurred and an additional layer of surreal horror is added.

A horror genre triumph, Five Nights at Freddy’s pays homage to its source material while creating a distinctive and terrifying experience for horror enthusiasts and newcomers alike. This film is a must-watch for anyone looking for a spine-tingling cinematic adventure because of its compelling story, outstanding performances, and directing vision that captures the essence of horror. Emma Tammi’s expertise, coupled with the stellar cast and crew, state-of-the-art practical effects, and a great story, elevates Five Nights at Freddy’s, making it a spine-tinglingly fun and wonderfully eerie horror film that will haunt viewers long after the credits roll.
