Fifty Shades Freed – Film Review
Just when you thought that the seemingly long-running Fifty Shades could not possibly get any worse, it does. Fifty Shades Freed is similar to its predecessors in terms of where it falters, and may just be one of the worst of the three. The only good thing is that it is the last installment.
Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) get married and celebrate, but soon are forced to deal with big problems when one of Anastasia’s former bosses Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson) begins to stalk the couple.
The chemistry between our two lead actors Johnson and Dornan is yet again, absolutely terrible. I have (unfortunately) seen all three films in this series now, and not once, did I buy them as a legitimate couple. In fact, in nearly every scene they are in together (which is a lot) they look extremely uncomfortable. According to various articles and news stories published, Johnson severely hated Dornan. This makes it even more difficult to believe that their characters are married to each other in Fifty Shades Freed.
Steele and Grey is by far the most unromantic and toxic relationship I have ever seen in a motion picture in my life. What’s unfortunate about the whole thing too, is that it appears as if the filmmakers are trying to portray their relationship as if it is a completely healthy and normal one, but it clearly, is not.
Also I did not care once about the story in Fifty Shades Freed. For almost the entire film, we simply see Grey and Steele doing “romantic” things together for nearly two hours. We are pretty much never shown anything of real substance to care about at all throughout the film. It’s hilarious how the filmmakers believed that audiences would actually care about the married lives of two of the most boring characters in cinematic history. The whole plot involving Steele’s former boss stalking them is a subplot, and even still, when the plot does arise, I was not invested in that plot either.
The film also tries to incorporate intense scenes scattered throughout, but instead of being thrilled, I was bored out of my mind. Additionally, these supposedly intense sequences were done so poorly that it was unbelievable how we were supposed to care during the scenes.
Furthermore, the dialogue that is spoken by our lead characters Steele and Grey is absolutely dreadful. Fifty Shades Freed contains the worst dialogue spoken in a film since 2017’s The Emoji Movie. What a shame.
If you are looking to see a film this weekend, please, do yourself an enormous favor, and do not see Fifty Shades Freed. Right now, Black Panther is still playing in theatres. If you have already seen Black Panther, I would recommend just seeing that film again. Any film is better than Fifty Shades Freed.
Absolutely clustered with awful characters, cringe-worthy dialogue, and an extremely pathetic story make Fifty Shades Freed one of the worst films in a long time.
